#1 Bread and Butter (a personal favorite)

Never underestimate how much people like one of the simplest items you can put together in minutes.

There’s something special about being greeted with a basket of warm bread and butter. The aroma of freshly baked bread fills the air, making everyone eager for that first bite before the main course even arrives. It’s a simple touch that instantly makes a meal feel welcoming and memorable.

While classic butter is always delicious, flavored butters make fresh bread even more irresistible. A creamy cinnamon sugar butter adds just the right touch of sweetness, while honey butter melts into every warm slice with rich, comforting flavor.

If you prefer something savory, try a jalapeño butter with a little kick, roasted garlic butter, or a blend of fresh herbs. They’re easy to make, full of flavor, and a wonderful way to turn an ordinary loaf of bread into something guests will remember long after the meal is over.

I love cornbread, and whipped honey butter is the perfect topping!

Fresh baked, store-bought, any type of bread, rolls, sliced, baguette… and butter, go with European if you want to kick it up, Kerry Irish Butter comes in a spreadable tub for on-the-go ease. Mix in some fresh herbs (and garlic) for a tasty appetizer.

Mix a variety of cheeses, from creamy and mild to sharp and aged, with buttery crackers, crisp artisan crisps, or rustic crostini so guests can create their perfect bite.

A round of brie, goat cheese, or cream cheese paired with crackers is always welcome. And on top, add some…

• pineapple jam

Or your favorite preserves for an easy appetizer everyone will enjoy.

#3. Something to Sip

Bring a bottle of wine, sparkling cider, lemonade, flavored syrup, sparkling water, or ingredients for a fun mocktail.

A bottle of cranberry juice and a few fresh limes can instantly elevate a gathering. Add tequila to make these.

4. A Sweet Treat

My motto? Life is short, eat dessert first!

A box of chocolates is always a crowd pleaser.

Sometimes the simplest desserts are the most satisfying. Warm cinnamon apples come together in minutes, and they are perfect over vanilla ice cream… It tastes like warm apple pie!

If you need a last-minute option, stop by a bakery and grab something you love.

5. A Simple Side Dish

For BBQs, cookouts, potlucks, and Friendsgiving, celebrations, and parties, offer to bring a side dish.

• Mac and Cheese
• pasta salad
• potato salad
• stuffing
• potato casserole
• sweet potato casserole
• deviled eggs

Another summer side dish must serve item is baked beans, for cookouts, BBQ’s and fun with sandwichces too.

6. Fresh Fruit

A bowl of seasonal fruit is beautiful. Choose apples any time and especially in the fall, pomegranates, clementines, persimmons in the winter, and strawberries and cherries in the spring.

Stone fruit and watermelon in summer to fall, buy a fruit platter, add in some fresh berries or cherries, or buy fruit and cut it yourself. Here you’ll find the recipes for the fruit dip, what a fun, easy treat.

Make a platter of chocolate covered fuit for any occasion!

7. Flowers (Ready to Display)

Flowers make a wonderful host gift, but don’t hand your host a bouquet that needs trimming and arranging.

Instead, place them in a vase, jar, or pitcher before you arrive (or buy them already arranged) so they can simply set them down and enjoy them.

A plant or fresh herbs are other really wonderful options. A basil plant looks and smells great on the kitchen counter. And fresh basil is the key to this simple pasta salad.

8. Ice Cream or Donuts

Sometimes the unexpected gifts are the most memorable.

A box of donuts, ice cream sandwiches, or chocolate-covered ice cream bars can instantly turn an ordinary gathering into a celebration.

Grab a container of ice cream, or make some homemade ice cream with my easy no-churn ice cream recipes.

Don’t underestimate grabbing something you love from a bakery, or the bakery section of a store, maybe a childhood favorite, or just something you haven’t had in a while.

9. A Thoughtful Non-Food Gift

When someone opens their home and invites you over, it’s always nice to arrive with a small token of appreciation.

While food gifts are often the first thing that comes to mind, non-food gifts can be just as thoughtful and are often enjoyed long after the night is over.

From flowers and herbs to kitchen essentials and cozy home accents, these simple gifts are easy to find, budget-friendly, and perfect for showing your gratitude.

A great item is a dish towel, just wrap it in a ribbon or twine and say thank you for the invite. Plain dishtowels, Plaid style dishtowels, any color, Buy in bulk, find your signature gift item, or with fun sayings. How about a fun candle.

Kitchen towels, a fancy salt, even smoked salt, specialty tea, or fresh herbs make great host gifts.

Think about what feels like a small luxury to you. Chances are, it will feel special to someone else, too.

An item typically available at every grocery, dollar-style store, or Amazon has them ready whenever an invite comes along. Pretty paper products, like colorful paper napkins or plates, they have lots of fun items and design options, some have fun sayings, others are seasonally themed.

10. Bring Their Favorite

The more you know about the host, the easier this becomes.

Love coffee? Bring a bag of local coffee beans. If they are a coffee lover, bring them a cup of their favorite, chances are, they’ve been go-go-go all day, and it will be just what they need.

Know they love chocolate? Bring their favorite candy.

Something everyone may love is a bottle of avocado oil or olive oil.

When in doubt, bring something you genuinely enjoy yourself. Make it oor buy it. Maybe it’ll become their favorite, too.

One Final Tip

Ask, How can I help?

Sometimes they might need you to pick up ice or lemons. I recall having a party years ago, and as you know, it can get very busy. I ran out of paper towels. Are you thinking, how does that happen?! They sell them in packs of 12 at big box stores, but it did! And a friend texted she was on her way over, and I said, I hope you have a roll of paper towels, I ran out… luckily she did…the day was saved!

There was no way I was heading to the store minutes before everyone arrived, and yes, paper towels are a must in my book when you have a party! But you might need something else. It’s always nice when someone lets you know they’re on their way, just in case a last minute need comes up.

And even a simple thank you note, when you arrive. Thanking them for opening their home to you, for thinking of them, and taking the time to make this day possible. Witih all the planning and preparing, But mostly being thought of is a gift within itself.

And one more thing…

This really fun, simple dessert is the Cannoli Dip. Make it or buy it, I’ve seen some options like this at Trader Joe’s, they sell the dip, just add the dippers. Costco sometimes has it, and so do grocery stores.

The best host gifts don’t have to be expensive, just thoughtful enough to let your host know how much you appreciate their hospitality.

Digital food thermometers have been around for a while. I’m going to tell you about my favorite one. I use it as a meat thermometer, a candy thermometer, a bbq thermometer, it’s handheld, instant read, and the best food thermometer I’ve used.

Why would I dedicate a post to an item you can pick up almost anywhere…

Because the one I love is totally different than the thermometers I’d find near me. It’s faster and more accurate, and whenever I give it as a gift, it is loved! Now, that is a gift you’d want to receive, right?! So why not give such a great gift!

Why get this I don’t have time to waste seeing if the temperature of the item I’m checking is correct, while I feel like I’m burning the hair off my hands/arm.

Ok, maybe I’m impatient… but I doubt I’m the only one.

I’ve tried many thermometers… more than anyone should ever have to buy.

I used to buy some at a restaurant supply store, but if they got too close to the heat, they’d melt. They never lasted long, I always found I was re-purchasing them. They’d work for a few months and then that was it. They’d go wonky, get wet, overheat and not work. You name it, I had three and would switch between them trying to guess which one was more accurate. 

Toffee Recipe (a holiday favorite)

Thermapen, pictured above. Great for testing the temperature in the love, on the stove, and on the grill.

If you’re on a budget this is the first version I purchased.

The bought a green 3-4 second thermapop, I really liked it. I used it for at least a year and a half before upgrading the other higher-priced 1-second thermapen. 

The thermapop is smaller,(looks like a popsicle) handy, and a great stocking stuffer, birthday gift, or an item for a new home.

I like the bright fun colors, you can easily see where your thermometer is when busy in the kitchen and looking quickly to locate it! I usually buy the orange as a gift because it’s so easy to see. And for the pink lover… I had to get pink. 

Having a precise temperature when creating recipes is essential.

No matter if you cook all the time or periodically, you’ll love the ease of getting the correct temperature on the items you’re cooking each and every time you cook/bake.

Just in case you’re really here for the toffee… and want to see how it turns out. Take a look. Oh, it’s so yummy! It’s one of my all-time favorite items to make and give around the holidays.

I had heard from many that Thermapen was a great thermometer. I started with the thermopop, then after a year or so finally got the thermopen. OMG, what a life-changing purchase. It’s so fast, and accurate. Waterproof and makes using it so effortless. 
Whether you’re using it when you open a hot oven, grill, or skillet. 

If you’re testing candy temperature, a sauce or chicken for dinner. 

It’s the ideal way to check to be sure the item you are cooking is going to be just the way you want it.

Food is expensive and it’s a total disappointment if it’s not cooked correctly or to the right temperature. 

I’ve purchased many of these thermometers for gifts and everyone just loves them. It not only makes a great gift for a real foodie, it makes a great gift for someone who wants to learn to cook better or make better meals. 

We’ve used the thermapen to check the temperature of the water from our fridge, to the temperature in the kitchen itself on a hot day to see if putting on the air conditioning would help. It’s so quick and easy and effortless! I use it all the time.

It’s a great gift for a housewarming, the perfect thank you for staying with someone, and a welcome birthday or Christmas gift as well. 

Sometimes we don’t want to splurge on an item that doesn’t seem “fancy” or needed.

But this is a much-needed item.

It has helped me for years to be a better cook. And I think you’ll agree.

Pot Holders I have had SO many potholders in the past and THESE are my favorite, they wash up nicely and are thick and I don’t get burned using them, which happens with lots of other potholders.

Cast Iron Skilletit’s like having a grill without all the fuss of grilling… no going out in the rain, no propane to worry about, easy cleanup, it browns chicken, and beef and cooks fish nicely- sears well, gives shrimp extra flavor and the liquid burns off so easily as the pan stays hot that it cooks evenly, it’s a must-have and I buy this for wedding gifts and even have a fun printable to give with the gift. Get the perfect lid for your cast iron here.

Glass Jars I put everything in glass jars, from pens on my desk to leftover soup, and I even use them as my everyday drinking glasses, I love them that much!
and use these great sip lids and find these leakproof lids for storing leftovers invaluable.

I have these pumps on my wish list… they look so great, I imagine soap and hand lotion in them.

Lemon Press I love lemons and limes and find that this lemon press isn’t only cute, it’s a must-have to get that lemon in the super-fast, makes lemonade making fun for everyone, and don’t forget about the ever-lovin’ margaritas!

Dutch Oven Le Creuset pot 5.5 – oh, and the color options are endless. These are the BEST pots to have, food cooks evenly, and these enamel-coated cast iron pots hold heat, so it’s great for serving out of. Brown meat, cook soup, boil potatoes, you name it, this is the pot to have. Remember it’s cast iron inside, so it’s heavy, but cleans up easily, since it’s coated, it’s recommended to use medium heat. And the cook foods beautifully in the oven, think roasts, stew, casseroles.

If you get something browned that won’t come out, use barkeepers friend, it’s gentle and will scrub away any stains. I have many sizes I use them all. The 9 qt is great when cooking for a crowd or boiling 2 lbs of pasta. I have a Wolf cooktop that is super hot, and these pots are the best. They are thinner metal pots that burn most items on a professional cooktop.

Stainless Bowls, no worrying about them breaking, they chill fast and can help you get something cold quicker in the fridge or freezer, or with warm water to get eggs to room temp easily.

Immersion Blender great for smoothies, sauces, mayo, salsa, and hummus. I’ve had many of them. I stopped buying the really inexpensive types as they break too easily on me. But buy what you can afford and remember if you use appliances all the time it’s best to buy as good as you can, replacing items in the kitchen again and again is so frustrating.

Tongs I find it really hard to cook without tongs. I use them for everything from cooking chicken to flipping vegetables, turning large cuts of meat in the oven, holding the turkey still to slice it nicely, it works better than a carving fork.

Shopping Bags After all the flimsy bags, I found these, and they are so great, I have 12 of them, we use them for everything! We stock the RV using them, place items in the car to bring on the go, and of course, use them for groceries, hauling items home from Big box stores, and so much more. They make a great gift, and anyone whom I’ve given them to thanks me all the time for them, as they say they use them every day as well.

Thermometer, this is for the serious cook!
And don’t miss this thermometer, it’s smaller, it’s perfect for everyone who cooks, and the price point is much lower, making it a great housewarming gift, a kid who moves out, or a stocking stuffer!

Any cook should have a good thermometer, knowing the temperature makes sure you don’t overcook your steak, and ensures the temperature of items is done, no guessing!

And I have a few of these great sip lids for glass jars, which not only make them cute it’s great when we have company, and everyone can tell whose glass is who’s!

Suggested items to buy to eat for meals for the month… for a family of 4 (adjust accordingly)

A question that is often asked when you stock up. Will this cost me more money?

In reality… No, it won’t cost you more than a month’s worth of regular shopping/eating out. If you plan it out, and eat what you buy. It may even be way less, since you’ll have a plan, not just buy things to buy them, and you’ll save yourself some stress, and a ton of time as you’ll have what you need and can spend all your extra meal planning, shopping time on something you really like doing.

Even if you don’t eat it in a month, there are items you normally consumed.

Helpful tips on keep the food fresh

Remember to keep items in the fridge fresh, don’t open it often or for long periods, as the temperature rises in the fridge

Condensation forms, and food goes bad as it warms up repeatedly.

Slice and freeze in smaller portions to save space.

Portion out foods for long term use.

This will also help with prep time for faster meals.

The shopping list I made includes some quantities, but as we all know, everyone eats differently. The portions I added are for a typical family of four:

Now that can really differ depending on who exactly the 4 people are and their appetites. 4 adult eaters vs two adults and 2 small children.

So not all meals will be using 2 lbs of protein, such as soups or the “pantry meals” like bean and cheese burritos, or a simple PB&J.

1 lb of chicken is sufficient for 6-8 servings. Remember the old “stone soup” story… you may be able to swap some items with neighbors to mix it up instead of going shopping for an item you wish you had but don’t.

Portion out the chicken if you purchase it fresh, slice and bag it, label it, and freeze it.

Most items I buy are not overly processed. If you or your family eat cereal, more canned items, or packaged foods, be sure to add those onto your list.

We meal prep most weeks. One item I find everyone devours is bean and cheese burritos!

If you have an instant post… this is a fun recipe to make.

Best advice… is to always have 2 weeks of food/water on hand in case of an emergency at all times.

Most people have heard that for years. Depending on where you live, natural disasters and emergencies happen, so keep a stocked pantry of 2 weeks’ worth is good.
Now add to that this list and you could potentially be set for way longer than a month.

Stock up now so you’ll have what you need to stay put. If more people stayed home when it wasn’t necessary to go out, it may be better for everyone in the long run.

These are also great for the person who loves to bake and share, but might be diabetic, or not want a hundred cookies lining the counters of their kitchen, they can make them and give them as gifts. Who wouldn’t love some new ornaments that are as adorable as these!

These are NOT edible!

But they do look and smell just like delicious cookies.

These are great to make with your kids.

You can paint them if you’d like.

You can string the gingerbread on a long ribbon to make a fun garland, that would look cute on a small tree or hanging from a mantle.

I continually update this post with my new favorites, each year I add new items. Typically around the holidays, but I do find this is great when I’m making my own wish list for new things, I reflect on the items I’m now loving.

Instant Pot
I’ve used a stovetop pressure cooker for years since the Instant Pot is electric, there is no monitoring needed and it does so much more. It’s a slow cooker, rice cooker and great for hard-boiled eggs too.

Glass Kitchen Aid Mixer Bowl
I love the look of a Kitchen Aid mixer with a glass bowl sitting on the counter and full of cookie dough, I still use my many stainless steel bowl, when it’s a big baking day I use them ALL! (OMG I’m so glad I got this bowl, I just love using it and it looks super pretty sitting on the counter too)

Le Creuset Red Dutch Oven-my most used size
I use this every day, really it’s not just super-pretty, but I love how food stays hot in it for a long time, it heats evenly and is perfect for pasta, soup, and frying too.

NordicWare Bundt Pan (I have a Cuisinart but this one is very similar and the Cuisinart is no longer available)
This is the best bundt pan I’ve ever used, the cake releases so nicely as long as the pan is sprayed with a baking spray try this Lemon Blueberry Bundt Cake first.

Roomba 
This will not only help you keep your kitchen clean like it does mine, it keeps all my floors super-clean! This is one item I wished I had purchased years ago when it first came out! (I just got a second Roomba, one for  upstairs and one for downstairs has really helped keep my home clean with little effort!)

Pint Jars

I use these for everything from serving drinks like Kentucky Dirty to storing leftovers. ( I use the wide mouth jars for drinking glasses in my kitchen, they are so convenient, and since a lid fits on them easily they are even great on the go!)

Stainless Steel Straws

I am in LOVE with these straws, when you sip on them the liquid immediately feels cold. Even when the ice in the glass melts these are a must for a straw fan. You can see mine here in this fun Lemon Coconut Water Cocktail.

Egg Crate

I always have a few eggs left in an egg crate in the fridge but like seeing exactly how many I have if there is only a few in an 18 count container.

4 Piece Stainless Steel Mixing Bowls Set

I love that these are lightweight and even if I drop or bang it there is no risk of breaking, plus they work great for adding ice cubes and chill sauces and such.

Immersion/hand Blender

I use an immersion blender all the time from soups like this Cherry Lime Smoothie, and Homemade Mayo and many other sauces.

KitchenAid  Mixer 

I use my mixer all the time and have had it for years. I love how durable it is.  You can see it in action making Red Velvet Snowflake Cookies here.

KitchenAid  Mixer BowlHave extra bowls really saves me a ton of time when making cookies and icing or cupcakes and frosting, I can make many batches without stopping to wash each bowl. I have 3 bowls!

 Flat Beater

I love having extra beater blades too. It sure makes big baking days go smoother.

Take Apart Kitchen Shears

I have three pairs of scissors in my kitchen drawer, they are able to be taken apart, perfect for cleaning and sharpening!

Flour Sack Towels 

These towels and thin and are great for drying glasses and they don’t shed off lint. these can be tucked in a waistband and are great for an immediate apron, and well they work great wrapped around ice packs when there is an injury too.

Berry Press

I use them berry strainer all the time, to make Blueberry Curd or all sorts of sauces and cream I need a fine strainer.

 Cast-Iron Skillet 12-Inch

I have three 12″ Lodge Cast Iron Skillets and I use them all… ALL the time. I recently make Skillet Apple Crisp, I loved this gorgeous Cranberry Cornbread and Cranberry Turkey Meatballs.

Spiral Slicer

I use this spiral Vegetable Slicer to make Zucchini Noodles and take a look at how it slices beets in this delicious Avocado Goat Cheese and Beet Salad.

Food Chopper

I use my chopper so often especially for onions and it worked great for chopping the items for this Jalapeno Pepper Jelly.

Reusable Parchment Paper

Parchment sheets are great for cooking and baking. I use them for easy clean up when I make Chicken Enchiladas in Green Sauce, and each and every time I bake cookies I use them here are my Giant Gingerbread Boy Cookies parchment sheet are great for making royal icing transfers and these Football Whoopie Pies.

Half Sheet Pans (these are gold, I had a hard time finding the silver version I have, but I kinda like the gold look!)

I have over a dozen baking sheets and use them ALL, yes I bake a lot. But I find having at least 4 is essential for any kitchen. They are large and have a nice edge on them, to hold up to carrying a lot of food, to baking nice sheets of Apple Squares, perfect for Cranberry Pecan Bars, you won’t want to miss making these Potato Chip Cookies I love how they aren’t flimsy and can handle chilling a whole tray of rice for Bacon and Egg Fried Rice as well.

 Adjustable Metal Cooling Rack(no longer available) but you can see what it looks like and view similar items.

I have two of these racks, it really helps keep all the baking trays from gathering all over my kitchen as well as keep all the cookies I’m working on in one area. I can sit and decorate each tray of cookies without even moving off my stool. We use these to help sort puzzle pieces on large puzzles with cookie sheets in the winter, I have a few of these racks and they get lots of use with projects that aren’t even baking-related.

 KitchenAid Food Grinder

I have been using this Meat Grider Attachment a TON, my new favorite thing to do is to make ground chicken for chicken meatballs. I make some new sauce about each week and these Chicken Meatballs in Plum Sauce are irresistible.

MY FAVORITE Gloves

NOW all this cooking and baking means there are lots of dishes to do. And I don’t like the way ordinary dishwashing gloves fit. Since being a hair-stylist had me in the sink all the time too, these gloves not only work well for coloring hair they are PERFECT for washing dishes too. They can withstand the heat of hot water, are fitted so glasses and other delicate items don’t slip out of your hands. They are great for cleaning all around the house and painting too.

 Cordless Electric Kettle

I’ve had an electric tea kettle for years and love how quickly it heats water, great for making sauces and other items for dinner in a hurry. It will boil water faster than my stove.

Cuisinart  Food Processor

I love shaved brussels sprouts and I can shave a whole bag in minutes perfect for this Brussels Sprouts Caesar Salad.

 Pizza Screen, Making pizza happens all the time in my kitchen and I have found that these pizza screens work the BEST out of all the items I have purchased, the bottom of the pizza gets crispy and delivers the best at-home pizza. THESE are a must for the PIZZA lover or even for the occasional reheating of pizza leftovers! Crispy bottom pizza for the WIN!

Julienne Peeler

Julienned carrots go into so many dishes I make take a look at these yummy recipes. California Roll Bowl, Asian Beef Short Ribs.

 Muffin Top Pan

I haven’t made muffin tops in this pan yet, but I have made deep dish cookies and they are fantastic like these Pecan Pie Cookies, Red Velvet Deep Dish Cookies, and Cherry Pie Cookies.

 Maple Wood Rolling Dowel

This is my go-to rolling pin, it’s smooth and long and allows me to roll my cookies and scones evenly with little effort these Gingerbread Scones are a favorite and totally cute too.

More items I’ve thought of:

1/4″ dowels for measuring cookie dough- you can find these at craft stores.

To roll cookies evenly, I use these as a guide under my rolling pin so my cookies are all even.

 My Favorite Spatula

This is a  great thin spatula perfect for flipping eggs, Pancakes and just about everything out of a pan!

Bakery Emulsions/Extracts

The flavors of these baking emulsions taste wonderful, I use them all the time. Lemon happens to be my most used, but I actually have all the flavors. Lemon Cream Cheese Cookies with Lemon Cream Cheese Frosting.

 Porcelain Serving Bowls

These are my go-to dishes for serving Udon soup and Pasta, I just love the size of these large bowls.

ThermoWorks ThermoPen  I‘ve have a ThermoPop thermometer for a few years now and LOVE it, I now have 2 thermometers, so that I can have one in the kitchen and be using one on the grill. The MK4 is faster than the ThermoPop and I use it all the time.
I have had many thermometers over the years and have melted many, this one I LOVE! (I did buy a ThermoPen and OMG I just LOVE it and wonder what took me so long. It’s so fast, great for grilling too).

Nuts are easily available in the grocery store so there is no need to hunt for a last-minute gift when they’re just minutes away.

Today I’m sharing with you an thank you idea with printable.

I purchased small succulent plants and found these recycled paper cups to place them into and attach the note with jute (natural string)

Here is where you will find the printable Thanks to you my knowledge grew printable tag @createdbydiane

So print it out on any color paper you choose and punch a whole in the tag and attach it to the plant. I punched a whole in the paper cup (they are a thin cardboard) to attach the tag to.

This recipes makes for an easy to give gift and also great for portion control snacking!

I’ve made Gingerbread Cookies, Gingerbread French toast with Gingerbread Butter,

Gingerbread Bread Sticks, Gingerbread Biscotti,

Gingerbread Cheesecake Bites, Gingerbread Scones,

but I had never even had gingerbread fudge and decided I had to change that FAST.

This fudge is creamy and delicious and just perfect for the GINGERBREAD lover in us all. We all like it right, it’s just not me….or is it.

I love the smell of gingerbread!

You’ll be surprised how easy this is to make and how quickly you can whip up a batch.
