Pet-Safe Ingredients

Always check the ingredients in the foods you give your pet. Some peanut butters may contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Choose a peanut butter that does not contain xylitol, and check the ingredient label before using it. If you’re unsure whether an ingredient is safe for your dog or cat, check with your veterinarian.

As far as the icing goes, the icing and sprinkles are made with sugar, so no unusual ingredients there.

This quick, easy recipe is perfect for a cat cake recipe or dog cake recipe. It’s the best birthday celebration cake or gatcha day recipe you can make. Have fun with it, I’m sure your pet will love their pet cake and all the attention on their special day.

Keyword: dog

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups Dry cat or dog food
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup pumpkin puree
  • Icing:
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 2 tablespoons sprinkles

Instructions

  • Put pet food into a food processor along with peanut butter and pumpkin puree.
  • Pulse until it resembles coarse crumbs and sticks together.
  • Press into a 4-inch springform mini cake pan or roll into a cake pop.
  • Remove from the cake pan.
  • Mix 1 cup powdered sugar with 2 tablespoons of water to make icing to pour over top of the cake. Spread it with a spatula and decorate with sprinkles.

Notes

I used a cupcake cake pop mold that I found on Amazon (here). Get creative and press it into a cookie cutter or just roll it into a ball and dip the top in icing if you like.

  1. Isn’t peanut butter toxic for cats? If this recipe is made for dogs I can understand, but please don’t add any ingredients that can be harmful to your feline babies. You can even Google it and it will tell you that’s bad for them.

    1. Peanut butter itself is not toxic to cats, but if it has xylitol added that is what can be toxic. Alternatives could be to use cream cheese or another item you and your cat would prefer.

  2. 5 stars
My dogs just loved this cake, they sat for a photo first then dove right in. I had fun making it. I look forward to this being the new birthday tradition for them. Thnaks so much now I not only have great cake recipes for our birthday but for them too.

  3. You really should not give your pet powdered sugar, nor sprinkles:) They wont die, but its not good for them, could lead to rotting teeth and diabetes etc. But beside from that its a really cute cake!

    1. Well, one time a year on their birthday will not rot their teeth or cause a problem. It’s clearly, not something to serve to them every day nor did I recommend doing so. Birthdays are once a year 🙂

    1. I haven’t made this cake with anything else, so I can’t offer a substitution at this time.

  4. Is it necessary to have it chill for a few hours or can it be given right away? Also would a blender be okay to mix everything? If not is there any other way to do so?

    1. Chilling it allows it to set up as it’s not baked and will crumble until the mixture is cold. (like a no-bake graham cracker crust, once it’s set up it doesn’t fall apart) there is not enough liquid for a blender to operate properly and it would probably not work well. If you don’t have a food processor, a manual food chopper will work, or chop the pet food very fine with a knife then stir in the remaining ingredients until it’s all combined.

  5. I have a question? Is there any special reason why you used Iams Cat or Dog Proactive Health Senior Plus food? Will any brand or style of dry food work? Also, I do not want to use sugar and sprinkles for icing. What do you think of using plain Greek yogurt as the icing- maybe mixed with something else. I have not decide what to use as of yet. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them. Thank you in advance.

    1. You can use any type of dry cat/dog food for this recipe. Yes you can use Greek yogurt or even peanut butter to top the cake off with I’m sure your pet will love it.

  6. are powdered sugar and sprinkles safe for my cat? it’s his birthday in a few weeks and this sounds like a cool recipe for him (and for him to share with his brother)

    1. In all I’ve read and talked with others about small amounts are ok, I wouldn’t feed it to them everyday, but once in a while should be fine.
I do not offer health advice for people or pets, just my opinion, I always suggest doing what you feel is right.

  7. I made this no bake “cake” for my bulldog’s birthday. It was very sloppy and difficult to form into a cake shape – do you think I over processed it in the food processor? I carefully measured the ingredients, and I refrigerated overnight. Have you come across this problem?

    1. the mixture is crumbly, but pressing it into a springform pan like you would a graham cracker crust which is also about the same consistency and making sure to press it firm, and then refrigerate should result in it easy to come out of the pan, I haven’t had any trouble with the mixture. Did you put it into a springform pan? Even if you processed it more, it would be finer, the peanut butter and pumpkin puree will hold it together once it’s chilled 6 hours. You can try adding in another tablespoon of peanut butter if that makes it easier for you to work with.

    1. Haha… I was wondering what that was! Cake! This is claissc. How sweet is that tiny tiny bow?! Ahhh… I know about the excitement/SADNESS that come with your little one turning two. Just be glad that #3 isn’t coming up!

  8. Happy Birthday beautiful Charlie. I’m sure Jack had a blast at your party. Your Mom is very special to have made you your own birthday cake. It looks great and I hope you enjoyed it. All the best Charlie for a healthy & happy, fun-loving year!
