Dirt Cupcakes

September 20, 2010

Dirt Cupcakes are super fun and just adorable who knew anyone would say that about dirt and worms, but you have to agree…. they are super cute!

I made these for my sons birthday and he LOVED them, so did his friends.

I made dirt cups with pudding a few years ago, he has spoken about them ever since…

I thought I’d surprise him with dirt cupcakes. This recipe can be made into a sheet cake as well.

He was SURPRISED and couldn’t wait to have one.

Neither could anyone else, when they saw them.

Which is always funny considering they want to eat dirt and worms.

I baked chocolate cupcakes and frosted them with chocolate frosting.

You can use any chocolate cupcake/cake recipe and chocolate frosting, I have my recipes below.
To decorate the cupcakes you’ll need Oreo crumbs, or crushed chocolate cookies and gummy worms.
Spread the frosting over the cupcakes and turn the cupcake over an “dip” them into the crums so they “stick” to the frosting.
Slice the gummy work in half and place the two cut ends into the cupcakes.

Recipe type: Cupcakes
Cuisine: American
Serves: 36 cupcakes
Ingredients
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 2 3/4 cups sifted flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 1/2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 350°.
  2. In a medium bowl combine cocoa with water mixing with a wire whisk until smooth. Cool completely. Sift flour with baking soda, salt, and baking powder.
  3. In a large bowl beat on high, butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until light for about 5 minutes.
  4. On a low speed beat in flour mixture and cocoa mixture Do not over beat. Pour into a cupcake-lined pan. Bake for 18-20 minutes. Test with a toothpick, you want it to be cooked by not so completely dry, the cupcakes take time to cool so a slightly moist crumb is good for cupcake testing. Do not over bake as they will become dry.

These cupcakes would be great for Halloween too,
do you know the Hearse Song {click if you’ve forgotten it}
every year just about Halloween time I think of that song and these cupcakes go right along with it.

I've made something similar for Halloween parties, but not as cupcakes. These are much cuter! And easier to eat, I suspect.
