gingerbread salt dough

Some of the best things are homemade, that is so true!

If you want to make some ornaments and have them for years, this is just the thing to make.

These are also great for the person who loves to bake and share, but might be diabetic, or not want a hundred cookies lining the counters of their kitchen, they can make them and give them as gifts. Who wouldn’t love some new ornaments that are as adorable as these!

These are NOT edible!

But they do look and smell just like delicious cookies.

These are great to make with your kids.

You can paint them if you’d like.

You can string the gingerbread on a long ribbon to make a fun garland, that would look cute on a small tree or hanging from a mantle.

These are made much like cookies, add all the ingredients to the bowl of a mixer, roll the dough out between wax paper.

Poke holes in the dough where you’d like the ribbon to go. (Use a straw or piping tip)

Bake them at a low temperature to have them set up firm.

Allow them to cool completely, you can paint or mod podge them so they last for years. Allow the mod podge to dry between coats.

  • 1 cup salt
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 tablespoons cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon ginger
  • 1 cup water
  • tool to make holes, straw-I used a metal straw, piping tip also work well I used a size 6 on mini hearts a size 10 would be good if you don't have a firm straw.

  • brush for mod podge
  • ribbon

Instructions

  • In the large bowl of a mixer add flour, cocoa, salt, cinnamon, ginger and mix on low.
  • Add in water and mix on low to medium speed until well blended and the dough pulls away from the sides of the bowl. Add a little more water to get a perfect consistency, if the dough is too wet add a tablespoon of flour at a time until it's pliable and easy to roll out.
  • (the bottom of the "cookie" is the side that will stay darkest you can bake them upside down)
  • Roll out dough between wax paper sheets to1/4" or thicker.
  • Cut dough with cookie cutters.
  • Poke holes where you'd like the ribbon/string to go.
  • Use a straw or round piping tip.
  • Bake them on lined parchment sheets at 170° for 2 hours or until completely dry.
  • When they are completely cooled.
  • If you want them to last a long time, paint the mod podge on both sides allowing each side to dry completely.

  1. I love this, I’m going to start early and make these for gifts for next year. No need to wait until the holidays come around, I like to get things done early. These are adorable.
