It can be left over. If gives the cookies nice tang but they will be delicious either way. Saco makes dry buttermilk (so do other companies like bobs redmill) and it’s available at walmart, grocery stores and online, but I completely understand if you cannnot find it locally,

Hi there, been wanting to make these but can’t find dry buttermilk. If I leave it out will it change the outcome a lot or can I replace it with something else?

I’m so happy you like this recipe. I make them every year and everyone raves over them. I live in So Cal, so very low humidity as well. The cookie dough is not “oily” but bakes up nice and the cookies always have a nice firm outside and a soft inside. If the cookies are a little dry for you roll them in between wax paper to avoid adding more flour, and bake them until just firm, 1 minute longer on these cookies will dry them out. They bake high and fast 🙂

I see that u posted this 11 years ago. Today is 12-3-2024 & I’m shocked that there aren’t a million likes & comments for this recipe. These are the MOST beautiful cookies-straight out of the oven! They look Exactly like your photos. The taste is delicious & am so excited to decorate these with my family. ( I’m in Arizona so the dough was a little on the dry side but even with this regional issue, oh my gosh! These cookies are stunners!! You weren’t kidding that the color deepens with cooking. Just wow!)
I can’t thank you enough for being so willing to share your recipe. They are on my permanent list now. We will think of you every Christmas!!!
