If you use cranberry sauce I am afraid the batter will be too wet, it'll need to be adjusted in the flour. You can certainly try it, increase the flour by 1/2 cup and see if it seems like a muffin batter, if it's too wet, add some more.
The cranberries do get soft when you bake the muffins, you could cut the cranberries in quarters so they are smaller and will bake up softer.
You can also leave the cranberries out of a few for the granddaughters, scoup them out first, then add the cranberries to the remaining batter.
