By reducing the sugar you will change the texture of the cake not just the sweetness, my best recommendation is to first make a recipe as written, then decide to make changes. One big reason you won’t like recipes is by changing the recipe before even trying them. Remember making changes in cooking usually works well, in baking the proportions allow the recipe to be successful. When altering a recipe try to reduce a small portion at a time, by reducing the sugar by such a large amount it most likely won’t be as the recipe is intended in taste and texture.

Does this cake seriously really need two full cups of sugar? I think that is always excessive in a recipe and I tend to never make anything that contains that much sugar. Can it be cut down to a cup? Thank you.

I would put it in the fridge, the cake will firm up a little and it will ensure it tastes really fresh when served especially with apples in it (most fruit desserts are better when refrigerated if you’re not serving right away)
Then just allow it to come to room temperature for an hour before serving for best flavor.
